Andrew Cumming is the founder and Managing Partner of Cumming & Partners. Andrew’s practice areas span a wide variety of cross-border matters, including U.S. and Canadian immigration law, estate and tax planning and all facets of wealth management law. Prior to establishing his own firm, Andrew worked at leading law firms in the United States (Kaufman, Miller) and Canada (Blake, Cassels & Graydon).

Andrew is a frequent speaker at conferences on cross-border legal topics. He has published numerous articles, and is the author of the best-selling book Florida Bound: The Essential Guide for Canadian Snowbirds (Macmillan Canada: 1998).

Andrew is active in the community, sitting or having sat on multiple national charity and foundation boards including Best Buddies Canada and the Daniel Snyder Memorial Foundation. He also established the Visiting Researcher placement program for the Spondyloarthropathy Methodology Research and Therapeutics (SMART) clinic at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto.

Mindy Tessler-Scott is a Partner in the immigration practice group at Cumming & Partners. Mindy has practiced exclusively in the field of immigration law since 1999. While Mindy is knowledgeable in all aspects of U.S. and Canadian corporate, employment and family-based immigration matters, her expertise lies in assisting individual clients to realize their unique immigration goals.

Mindy has extensive experience with extra-ordinary ability petitions (O-1 and EB-1) and over the years, has worked with many athletes, artists, entertainers and production houses to obtain work visas and find more permanent solutions that suits their particular needs. Ian Goés is a Co-Founder of Cumming & Partners. Ian principally advises on corporate and business immigration matters, and specializes in assisting companies and their employees resolve cross-border work and travel issues. In addition, Ian frequently works with businesses and entrepreneurs to secure investment and treaty trader visas.

Ian is a recognized expert on corporate immigration matters for both the United States and Canada. He works with numerous Fortune 500 and multinational companies, in addition to mid-size and start-up corporations. Ian has extensive experience working with clients in most major industries.

Axel is Senior Counsel and Head of Business Initiatives at Cumming & Partners. Axel delivers effective, pragmatic and integrated business and legal solutions to privately-held companies, their executives and shareholders as well as high-net worth families. He counsels clients with respect to sophisticated business structures and transactions, including the acquisition and sale of businesses, reorganizations, estate freezes and trust and estate planning. Axel is also an expert on immigration planning for businesses and their executives engaged in cross-border trade and investments.

He provides “general counsel” and “home family office” type of advice regarding wealth management, asset protection, inter-generational wealth transfers, succession planning, trustee mandates, investments, venture capital and philanthropic initiatives (including establishing charities and charitable foundations).

He has acted for clients in a wide range of matters, including NHL players and their estate plans, trust companies in multi-billion dollar trust roll-overs/reorganizations, providing indenture trustee and trust governance advice and representing Canada’s largest private equity funds on private placements and cross-border investments.

Axel has been an Adjunct Professor at Osgoode Hall Law School teaching Legal Drafting and has taught the experiential-based course, The Introduction to the Practice of Transactional Law at Tulane Law School (recognized as one of the top 20 innovative law schools in the U.S. by National Jurist Magazine). He is an advisor and contributor to the Practice Advisor at LexisNexis, one of the world’s largest providers of legal and financial information services; and he is currently writing a book on Legal Drafting to be published by LexisNexis.

Prior to joining Cumming & Partners, Axel was a Partner in the Toronto Office of a leading U.S. law firm, General Counsel with an international Venture Capital/Private Equity and Hedge Fund Group and an Associate with a leading Canadian business law firm, now part of the world’s largest law firm.

Axel holds and has assumed leadership roles with various not-for-profit organizations: He is currently a Director of the Caledon Ski Club; he was a member of the Board of Directors of the Swedish-Canadian Chamber of Commerce; he served as Chairman of the Swedish School in Toronto and has coached youth football at Mooredale.

Barsha is a Foreign Legal Consultant in Ontario licensed with the Law Society of Upper Canada and a U.S. immigration attorney with experience in a broad array of U.S. immigration issues. She counsels large corporations in sophisticated immigrant and non-immigrant matters, including E, EB, H, L, and TN visas, among others. She also has extensive experience in asylum and family immigration matters having worked for various individual clients in the past, including attending court hearings and filing appellate briefs. In the past, Barsha has taught courses on immigration and refugee law as an adjunct professor in Nepal and has also worked for UN’s International Organization for Migration in Nepal.

Barsha brings her years of experience with U.S., Canada, and various international immigration laws to the table when she prepares petitions and applications on behalf of her clients. She believes in zealous representation of her clients and offers dedicated services that yield anticipated results.

Jessica previously articled with Cumming & Partners and has rejoined the firm as an Associate. Her summer and articling experience provided her with exposure to both U.S. and Canadian immigration and she is excited to build upon her prior experience. Jessica, a recent graduate from the J.D. program at the University of Windsor, finished within the top 20 in her graduating class. She was actively involved in several extra-curricular activities, such as the Windsor Law Peer Mentorship Program and was a member of both the Women and the Law organization and the Women’s legal Education and Action Fund. She also participated in many advocacy programs, as she was a member of the moot team (2018) that was awarded the 2nd place at the 2018 Walsh Family Moot competition in Toronto.

Krista is an Associate with Cumming & Partners. Drawing on her experience in immigration and workplace law, Krista collaborates with corporate clients to devise immigration solutions that respond to both their short-and-long term business needs. Prior to joining Cumming & Partners, Krista worked at a national labour and employment law firm where she advised clients across a wide array of industries on temporary and permanent immigration matters and other areas of workplace law.

Krista completed her J.D. at Osgoode Hall Law School during which time she served as a Student Caseworker in the Immigration Division at Parkdale Community Legal Services and as a Research Assistant specializing in immigration and refugee law. She was the recipient of various accolades including a Dean’s Gold Key; the Bruce Lokash Memorial Prize (Athletics) and the Bora Laskin Prize (Law & Religion). Currently, Krista sits on the Board of Directors for the Elspeth Heyworth Centre for Women.

Julia completed her articles at Cumming and Partners and now works as an Associate Lawyer.  Julia completed her LL.B from Queen Mary University of London, UK and is a graduate from the Canadian Common Law LL.M Program at Osgoode Hall Law School.  Julia’s articling experience at Cumming and Partners provided her with exposure to Canadian and U.S Immigration matters for individual and corporate clients. Julia continues to develop and build upon her knowledge and expertise in both areas. 

Julia was actively involved in volunteering for multiple pro-bono clinics while completing her law degree. Julia worked at the PopLaw Legal Advice Clinic at Dentons LLP and the Pro-Bono Human Rights Clinic at Reed Smith LLP, both in London, UK. Julia served as a Student Caseworker at the Freedom Law Clinic in which she worked to overturn wrongful convictions and miscarriages of justice. Lisa is a Senior Law Clerk with Cumming & Partners.

Mary is a Senior Law Clerk working out of New York. She has worked in the immigration field since 1988, and has experience in all areas of immigration law. She has developed a unique specialization in handling U.S. Labor Certification matters, which has now become her principal role at our firm.

Mary has an abundance of experience dealing with the Department of Labor at the Federal and State levels throughout the United States. She is an expert at guiding foreign nationals and U.S. employers through the Labor Certification process from the inception of the application through to its submission and approval. Mary frequently also deals with Department of State inquiries as to minimum eligibility requirements, business necessity requirements and Labor Certification audits.

Irina is the Legal Administrative Assistant to both Ian J. Goés a Partner and Peina Guan (Controller and Operations Manager) at Cumming & Partners. In addition to offering traditional administrative support Irina provides support with billings and finance matters.

Prior to joining our firm, Irina spent several years working as Legal Assistant in Personal Injury field. 

Ms. Kovaleva has earned a Global Business Management Diploma from Humber College (2016). She has been with C&P since January 2021.

Kayla is a legal administrative assistant working along the Business Development team to support new client initiatives. Prior to joining our firm, she gained valuable experience as an administrative assistant. Kayla is very excited to start her legal career here at C&P.

Giselle Lu is a Legal Administrative Assistant at Cumming and Partners in Toronto. She assists a variety of individual and corporate clients with U.S. immigration matters. She supports her team by providing administrative support and assists with processing of applications.

Prior to joining Cumming and Partners, Giselle worked at an immigration law firm in downtown Toronto.

Patricia is a Legal Administrative Assistant with Hillary Bullock’s team at Cumming & Partners. She works closely with Senior Law Clerk, Tabitha Holland, providing administrative support and assists with the drafting and processing of applications.

Prior to joining Cumming & Partners, Patricia worked as an executive legal assistant for an immigration consultant firm.

Patricia is fluent in English, Spanish and has knowledge of French and Italian.
